Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4th, 1961, Obama had a tough upbringing. His father left the family when he was just two years old, leaving his mother and grandparents to raise him. After spending his early childhood in Hawaii, he moved to Indonesia with his mom and stepdad at the age of six.
Obama returned to Hawaii at the age of ten and attended the Punahou School, where he kicked ass both academically and athletically. He then went on to study at Occidental College in Los Angeles before transferring to Columbia University in New York City, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1983.
After college, Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago, where he helped improve living conditions in low-income neighborhoods. He then attended Harvard Law School, where he became the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. He went on to work as a civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School.
In 1996, Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate, where he served for eight years. He worked on a number of important issues during his time there, including healthcare, education, and criminal justice reform. He then went on to become a U.S. Senator, and his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 put him on the national stage.
In 2008, Obama announced his candidacy for president, and he ran on a platform of hope and change. He defeated John McCain in the general election, becoming the first African American president in U.S. history. During his time in office, he implemented some major policies, including the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the legalization of same-sex marriage.
Obama was reelected in 2012, and during his second term, he continued to tackle important issues like climate change, gun control, and criminal justice reform. He also oversaw the military operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist group al-Qaeda.
Since leaving office in 2017, Obama has continued to be an active voice in politics and advocacy. He's championed causes like voting rights, climate change, and criminal justice reform, and he's written some great books, including his memoirs, "Dreams from My Father" and "A Promised Land."
